"The dogs bark, but the caravan moves on."
I've loved that old proverb for years.
The Caravan Moves On is a place for conversations about faith, history, books, culture, people, and whatever else seems interesting enough to talk about. Some conversations will be serious. Others probably won't be. All of them, I hope, will be thoughtful, curious, and worth the time.
About ChriS DUNCAN
For twenty-six years, I had the privilege of serving Trinity Presbyterian Church in Opelika, Alabama, including twenty years as its senior pastor and all twenty-six as director of the church choir.
Along the way, I preached more than 1,300 sermons, directed a few thousand hymns and anthems, taught countless classes, sat through more committee meetings than I care to remember, and had a front-row seat to the joys, sorrows, absurdities, and grace that make up an ordinary human life. In 2026, I closed that chapter of life and began a new one.
I'm a husband, father, pastor, Beeson Divinity School graduate, PhD historian by training, lifelong Auburn man, and incurably curious about almost everything. My first real jobs were cutting lawns, delivering newspapers, pushing buggies for Kroger, directing traffic at Opelika High School, working for Movie Gallery, then serving as a bank teller for two banks. I'm fascinated by history and theology, books and music, science and culture, old cemeteries and interesting people — and especially by the stories that connect all of them.
That curiosity is really what The Caravan Moves On is about.
After spending much of my adult life speaking from a pulpit, I'm looking forward to a new kind of conversation: exploring ideas, asking questions, telling stories, talking with interesting people, and occasionally wandering down a rabbit trail simply because it looks too interesting to pass by.
I don't know exactly where the caravan is headed.
That's part of the fun.
